Rana latastei Italian agile frog 92/43/EEC Directive ann. II and IV It belongs to the red frogs group and is an endemic species of the Po-venetian plain, also distributed on the Carso Goriziano, Slovenia and in the northwest of Istria. It lives in humid forests with undergrowth and slow stream ponds, it feeds mainly on insects. It lives almost exclusively on land and went into the water only for reproduction, which occurs in small pools, ponds or, more rarely, in slow stream little rivers. It breeds from February to April, for a short period (2-3 days to a maximum of 2-3 weeks). Males reach the breeding site before females and emit little songs recall of low intensity. The tadpoles are preyed upon by aquatic insects, aquatic birds, owls and water snakes. The decline of the species is related to the progressive disappearance of suitable habitats and to populations fragmentation.
