LIFE FRIULI FENS

Coenonympha oedippus

False ringlet
92/43/EEC Directive ann. II and IV

Among the over 150 species of butterflies recorded in the resurgences, this species is typically linked to the wet meadows near water outcrops. The adults are small (35-45 mm wingspan) with rounded wings. The upper side of the wings is dark brown, almost black, the bottom is brown, with black eyes surrounded by a yellowish border, 3 on front wing and 4 or 5 on the back. Females are larger than males, with more developed eyes, often visible on the upper surface of the hind wings.
The larvae of this species grow at the expense of other plants such as grasses (eg Molinia coerulea) and Juncacee (eg Schoenus nigricans).
