Leuciscus souffia Italian souffe 92/43/EEC Directive ann. II It is a widely Central Europe distributed species; the Italian subspecies is endemic of the Alpine and Apennine rivers. It reaches 20 cm in length and it is omnivorous, with the animal component predominantly consisting of benthonic macroinvertebrates, winged insects and arachnids; the vegetal component consists mainly of algae. It is particularly sensitive to water pollution and the deterioration of river channels irreversibly affect the spawning areas. Even the excessive water withdrawals can produce considerable damages.
